What is a scoop coater and which size do you need?
A scoop coater is an aluminum trough with a straight coating lip that holds liquid photo emulsion and spreads it in one even pass up the mesh of a screen printing screen. Choose a coater 1 to 2 inches narrower than the inside dimension of the frame you coat across: a 16 inch coater for 20 x 24 and 20 x 28 inch frames, an 18 inch coater for 23 x 31 inch frames, and 6 to 12 inch coaters for hat, pocket, sleeve and small frames. Use the sharp edge on 180 mesh and finer for a thin, sharp stencil, and the round edge on 60 to 160 mesh for a thicker emulsion deposit. Buckets of Ink in Tempe, Arizona stocks the Nortech dual-edge scoop coater in all seven widths from $10.

Scoop coater size picker: match the coater to the frame
Enter the frame you coat and the picker names the coater width, explains the clearance, and lists the pre-stretched screens in that frame size.
Sharp edge vs round edge: which side of the scoop coater to use
The Nortech NOR-SC is a dual-edge coater. Flip it over and you change how much emulsion goes on the mesh.
Sharp edge: 180 mesh and finer
- Thin, flat emulsion layer with low emulsion-over-mesh (EOM), sharp for halftones, fine line and small text
- Use on 180, 200, 230, 255, 280, 305, 355 and 420 mesh with fast SBQ emulsions such as Ulano QX-5 or Chromaline ChromaBlue
- Standard sequence: 1 coat on the print side, 1 on the squeegee side, dry print side down
Round edge: 60 to 160 mesh
- Thicker emulsion deposit that fills the larger openings of coarse mesh for opaque underbases, athletic, puff and glitter prints
- Use on 60, 86, 110, 125, 130, 156 and 160 mesh; pairs with Ulano Orange, Chromaline PC 701 and CCI TX-Blue
- Typical sequence: 2 coats on the print side, 1 on the squeegee side, or 2 over 2 for high-density ink
| Mesh count | Edge | Coats (print side / squeegee side) | Emulsion | Typical job |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 to 86 | Round | 2 / 2 | Ulano Orange, CCI TX-Blue | Glitter, puff, high density, athletic plastisol |
| 110 to 130 | Round | 2 / 1 | Ulano Orange, Chromaline PC 701, CCI VPR Red | White underbase, opaque plastisol on darks |
| 156 to 160 | Round or sharp | 1 / 1 or 2 / 1 | Ulano Orange, Trifecta, ChromaLime | Standard spot color, everyday tee work |
| 180 to 230 | Sharp | 1 / 1 | Ulano QX-5, ChromaBlue, 925WR-P for water-based | Small text, fine spot color, water-based and discharge |
| 255 to 420 | Sharp | 1 / 1, face coat optional | Ulano QX-5, ChromaBlue, CTR | Halftones, simulated process, four-color process |
How to choose a scoop coater
Width is the first decision, but edge profile, capacity, end caps and material decide how clean the coat is and how long the tool lasts.
Width: 1 to 2 inches under the inside frame dimension
The coater has to clear the inside of the frame with room to tilt. A 20 x 24 frame has about 17.5 inches inside across the short side, so a 16 inch coater fits. Too narrow and you need two passes with a seam; too wide and it will not fit between the bars.
Dual edge beats single edge
One tool covers every mesh count in the shop. Sharp side for fine mesh and halftones, round side for coarse mesh and underbases, no second coater to buy or store.
Aluminum, not plastic
Extruded T6 aluminum keeps a perfectly straight lip that plastic coaters lose when they warp. A straight edge is what prevents streaks and thick bands.
Capacity
The deep Nortech trough holds enough emulsion to coat several screens without refilling, which keeps the lip wet and the coat consistent across a rack of screens.
End caps and dust cover
Injection-molded end caps stop emulsion running off the ends. The snap-on dust shield keeps lint and dried flakes out of the trough between screens so pinholes do not start in the coater.
Buy one per emulsion type
Shops that run both plastisol and water-based emulsions keep a coater for each so SBQ and diazo chemistry never mix in the trough.
Small sizes for small frames
6, 8, 10 and 12 inch coaters cover hat frames, pocket and sleeve screens, 10 x 14 and 12 x 16 hobby frames, and touch-up coats on big screens.
Large sizes for big screens
18 and 20 inch coaters coat 23 x 31 and 25 x 36 frames in one pass for jacket backs, all-over prints and automatic presses.
Clean it before it dries
Rinse the trough with water as soon as you finish coating. Dried emulsion on the lip is the number one cause of lines in the next coat.
How to coat a screen with a scoop coater
- Degrease and dry the screenScrub the mesh with degreaser, rinse and let it dry completely. New mesh needs it; so does reclaimed mesh.
- Fill the coaterPour emulsion to about a third of the trough depth. Tilt the coater to spread it along the full lip. Work under yellow safelight.
- Coat the print side firstStand the screen on its bottom edge, print side (outside) toward you. Touch the lip to the mesh near the bottom, tilt until the emulsion wets the mesh across the full width, then pull up in one smooth stroke at steady speed. Tilt back at the top to break contact cleanly.
- Coat the squeegee sideFlip the screen and repeat on the inside. Use the edge for the mesh count: round for 60 to 160, sharp for 180 and up.
- Add coats if neededCoarse mesh and thick inks take a second print-side coat. For a glass-smooth stencil on halftones, add a thin face coat after the first dry.
- Dry flat, print side downDry horizontally in a dark cabinet with warm moving air so the emulsion settles to the print side. Expose when fully dry, then wash out.

Scoop coater troubleshooting
Most coating problems trace back to the lip, the speed of the stroke or the dryness of the screen.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Streaks or lines in the coat | Dried emulsion or a nick on the lip; lint in the trough | Clean the lip with a soft pad and water; use the dust cover; replace a coater with a damaged edge |
| Thick band at the top of the screen | Stopped or slowed at the end of the stroke before tilting away | Keep moving to the top bar, then tilt the coater back in one motion |
| Thin, patchy coat | Coater too far from vertical, too little emulsion, stroke too fast | Fill the trough deeper, slow the stroke, keep the lip in full contact |
| Pinholes after exposure | Dust on the mesh or in the emulsion; mesh not degreased | Degrease, coat in a clean room, filter old emulsion, add a face coat |
| Emulsion runs or sags | Too many wet coats; dried vertically | Dry flat, print side down, between coats; cut back to 1 over 1 on fine mesh |
| Coater will not fit the frame | Width too close to the inside frame dimension | Drop one size: 16 inch for 20 wide frames, 18 inch for 23 wide frames |
| Stencil breaks down on press | EOM too low from the sharp edge on coarse mesh; underexposed | Use the round edge and 2 over 1 on 110 to 160 mesh; check exposure with a step wedge |

Scoop coater questions
A scoop coater is an aluminum trough with a straight coating lip used to apply liquid photo emulsion to a screen printing screen. You fill it with emulsion, hold it against the mesh, tilt it until the emulsion touches the screen and pull it upward in one pass to leave an even layer. The Nortech NOR-SC at Buckets of Ink has two lips, a sharp edge and a round edge, so one tool handles every mesh count.
Choose a coater 1 to 2 inches narrower than the inside dimension of the frame in the direction you coat. A 20 x 24 or 20 x 28 inch aluminum frame has about 17.5 inches inside across the short side, so use a 16 inch coater. A 23 x 31 frame takes an 18 inch coater. Hat, pocket and small hobby frames use 6 to 12 inch coaters. Buckets of Ink stocks 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 18 and 20 inch.
The sharp edge leaves a thin, flat emulsion layer and is used on 180 mesh and finer for halftones, fine line and small text. The round edge deposits more emulsion and is used on 60 to 160 mesh where the larger openings need a thicker stencil for opaque underbases, athletic, puff and glitter inks.
For 180 mesh and finer, one coat on the print side and one on the squeegee side with the sharp edge. For 110 to 160 mesh, two coats on the print side and one on the squeegee side with the round edge. For 60 to 86 mesh and high-density inks, two over two. Dry flat, print side down, between extra coats.
Coat the print side (the outside, the side that touches the shirt) first, then the squeegee side. Finishing on the squeegee side pushes emulsion through to the print side, where the stencil needs to be thickest, and the screen dries print side down so the emulsion settles there.
At Buckets of Ink the Nortech NOR-SC dual-edge aluminum scoop coater starts at $10 for the 6 inch width; wider sizes step up from there and the exact price for each width shows when you select the size on the product page. Shipping is included on orders over $250.
Yes for anything beyond occasional use. Extruded T6 aluminum keeps a dead-straight lip, which is what prevents streaks and thick bands; plastic coaters warp and nick. Aluminum also cleans faster and does not hold old emulsion in scratches.
Pour unused emulsion back into the container through a filter, then rinse the trough and both lips with water right away. Wipe the lips with a soft microfiber pad, never a blade or abrasive, and dry it before snapping on the dust cover. Dried emulsion on the lip causes lines in the next coat.
Any liquid photo emulsion coats with a scoop coater. Buckets of Ink stocks Ulano QX-5 and Chromaline ChromaBlue for fine mesh and halftones, Ulano Orange, Chromaline PC 701 and CCI TX-Blue for plastisol on coarse mesh, Ulano 925WR-P for water-based and discharge, and Ulano Trifecta and CCI VPR Red for shops that run every ink.
You can spread emulsion with a squeegee or a card, but the layer will be uneven and the stencil will pinhole and break down early. A scoop coater lays a uniform film in one pass and is the single cheapest upgrade to stencil quality in a screen printing shop.
Buckets of Ink at 906 S Priest Dr #101 in Tempe, Arizona stocks the Nortech scoop coater in all seven widths with Ulano, Chromaline and CCI emulsion for walk-in pickup Monday to Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, and ships nationwide. Call 480-229-7806.
