What "Pantone Ink" Means in Screen Printing
The Pantone Matching System is the universal color language of branding. The current Pantone Formula Guide defines 2,390 spot colors, each with a precise mixing formula, so a logo approved in one city prints identically in another. In screen printing, a Pantone spot color is printed as a single dedicated ink through its own screen, which is how brand colors stay dead-on consistent across reorders.
That is different from 4-color process (CMYK), which builds colors from halftone dots of cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Process printing is right for photographic art; spot color is right for logos, uniforms and any job where the client hands you a PMS number.
One honest note most suppliers skip: printed ink on fabric is always a simulation of the Pantone reference, which was designed for coated paper. Substrate color, mesh count, underbase and cure all shift the result slightly. That is exactly why shops rely on formula-mixed plastisol, controlled lighting and wet samples instead of guessing from a screen.

How To Spec a Pantone Color So It Prints Right
- Confirm C or U. PMS 186 C and 186 U are different targets. Coated (C) references are brighter; uncoated (U) sit softer. Approvals should name one.
- Check guide age. Pantone recommends replacing Formula Guides every 12 to 18 months because the inks on the pages fade. A sun-bleached fan deck causes real-world mismatches.
- Name the fabric. The same ink reads differently on white cotton, heather blends and black poly. Tell us the garment so we can advise on underbase and low-bleed chemistry.
- Approve under D50 lighting. Judge wet samples under a 5000K (D50) light source. Shop fluorescents and phone screens both lie about color.
- Lock the reorder. Once a custom match is approved, the labeled formula reference on your container is the reorder key. Quote it and the next batch matches the last one.

Pantone ink for screen printing is plastisol or water-based ink formulated to reproduce a specific color from the Pantone Matching System (PMS), the numbered color standard used by brands and designers worldwide. Printers either use ready-for-use spot colors that align with common PMS references or have ink custom-mixed to simulate an exact Pantone number on fabric.

Should I specify the coated (C) or uncoated (U) Pantone reference?
Most apparel jobs reference the coated (C) version because it is the standard brands use in their guidelines. Tell us which fan-deck reference your client approved, C or U, and note it in the order so the mix is evaluated against the right target.
Why does the same Pantone ink look different on a dark shirt?
Ink printed directly on a dark garment loses vibrancy because the shirt color shows through. Printing a white underbase first, such as Wilflex Epic Bolt LC or WM Plastics Ultimate White, gives the top color a neutral foundation so it reads true to the PMS target.
What container sizes do Pantone plastisol inks come in?
Quart (about 32 fl oz), gallon (128 fl oz), and 5-gallon (640 fl oz) buckets. Stock colors and custom mixes are available in all three sizes.
How much does screen printing Pantone ink cost?
In-stock spot color quarts run about $25 to $53, gallons about $76 to $186, and 5-gallon buckets about $320 to $891 depending on brand, pigment load, and color family. White and black foundation inks start around $18 per quart. Custom PMS mixes are quoted per order based on color and volume.
What is the difference between spot color and 4-color process for Pantone work?
A spot color is one ink mixed to the target color, which is the most accurate way to hit a PMS number. Four-color process (CMYK) builds colors from halftone dots of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black; it simulates many colors but cannot guarantee an exact PMS match. Do Pantone plastisol inks work on polyester and performance fabrics?
