What screen printing mesh count should you use?

Screen printing mesh is the woven polyester fabric stretched across the frame; its mesh count is threads per inch. Lower counts have bigger openings and lay down more ink: 60 to 86 mesh for glitter, puff and athletic plastisol, 110 to 125 mesh for white underbases and everyday plastisol on dark shirts, 156 to 200 mesh for standard spot color with finer detail, 230 to 305 mesh for halftones, water-based and discharge ink, and 355 to 420 mesh for fine process and simulated process work. Buckets of Ink in Tempe, Arizona stocks all of them on pre-stretched Nortech aluminum frames from $27, with white mesh through 180 and yellow mesh from 180 up to reduce light scatter on fine detail.

Mesh count chart: what each count is for

Every count on this scale is in stock on a pre-stretched aluminum frame. The dot shows the mesh color we stock it in.

60Glitter, shimmer, metallic flake, heavy puff, thick athletic ink
86Puff, high-density, athletic plastisol, heavy white on fleece
110-130White underbase, opaque plastisol on darks, general purpose
156-160Standard spot color on lights and darks, medium detail
180-200Fine spot color, small text, top colors over an underbase
230-255Water-based and discharge, soft-hand prints, coarse halftones
280-305Halftones to 55 lpi, simulated process, UV and graphic inks
355-420Fine halftones 55 to 65 lpi, four-color process, thin solvent inks

White dot: white mesh, best for opacity and underbases. Yellow dot: yellow dyed mesh, absorbs stray UV during exposure so fine lines and halftone dots hold their edge.

How to choose screen printing mesh

Mesh count is the headline number, but thread diameter, mesh color, tension and frame size all change how the screen prints.

Mesh count and ink deposit

Fewer threads per inch means larger openings and a thicker ink film. Drop to 86 or 110 for opacity on darks; climb to 230 and up when you want a soft hand or a clean halftone dot.

Thread diameter

Standard (S) threads give a stronger mesh for shop use; thinner (T) threads at the same count open the mesh for more ink. Our Nortech screens use standard-thread monofilament polyester built for plastisol shops.

White vs yellow mesh

Yellow dyed mesh absorbs the UV light that scatters sideways during exposure, so edges stay sharp on 180 mesh and finer. White mesh is fine for 60 to 160 where the art is bold.

Frame size and image area

Keep at least 3 to 4 inches between the image and the frame so the squeegee can print flat. 20 x 24 fits most manual presses; 23 x 31 handles jacket backs and automatics.

Tension

Pre-stretched screens arrive at working tension. Check with a tension meter when registration drifts; loose mesh smears halftones and lifts the stencil on multi-color jobs.

Emulsion over mesh

Coat 1 over 1 with a sharp-edge scoop coater on fine mesh, 2 over 1 or more on coarse mesh. Pair fast SBQ emulsions such as Ulano QX-5 or Chromaline with yellow mesh for halftones.

Degrease before the first coat

New mesh carries sizing from the factory. Scrub with a degreaser, rinse and dry before coating or the emulsion will fisheye and pinhole.

Reclaim and reuse

Aluminum frames are reclaimed dozens of times. Stencil remover, haze remover and a dip tank bring the mesh back; replace the screen when the mesh is torn or tension falls off.

Buy by the job mix

Most shops run 110, 156 and 230 for 80 percent of orders. Add 86 for athletic and puff, and 280 to 305 for process work. We will set up a starter set for your press.

How to prepare a screen printing mesh for printing

Aluminum screen printing frame with yellow mesh and an aluminum handle squeegee
  1. DegreaseScrub both sides of new or reclaimed mesh with degreaser, rinse, let dry.
  2. CoatUse a scoop coater: one coat on each side for fine mesh, two on the print side for 60 to 110. Dry flat, print side down, in the dark.
  3. ExposeFilm positive on the print side, expose at the tested time. Yellow mesh lets you hold fine detail at full exposure.
  4. Wash out and dryRinse with gentle pressure until the image clears, check for pinholes on a light table, touch up with blockout, dry.
  5. Tape and printSplit tape the inside edges, set off-contact, and print. Clean with screen wash on press for the next color.
  6. ReclaimStencil remover, pressure wash, haze remover if ghosting shows, then back to step 1.

Emulsion for the mesh: Ulano

Reclaiming screen printing mesh

An aluminum screen is a long-term tool. The mesh is reclaimed with three chemicals and a washout booth, and only replaced when it tears or loses tension.

Ink and emulsion in one step

Easistrip Supra in a dip tank takes plastisol and stencil off together; Easiway 701N screen wash and stain remover handles ink on press.

Stencil remover

EasiSolv 500 concentrate (1:25) or EasiSolv 51 ready to use. Spray, wait a minute, pressure wash before it dries.

Haze and ghost images

Haze remover on a stubborn ghost after reclaiming, with a scrub pad, then rinse and degrease before the next coat.

Screen printing mesh questions

Screen printing mesh is the monofilament polyester fabric stretched tight across a frame. Emulsion is coated onto it, exposed and washed out to form the stencil, and the squeegee pushes ink through the open mesh onto the shirt. The mesh count, measured in threads per inch, controls how much ink goes through and how fine the detail can be.

For most t-shirt work, 110 to 160 mesh covers plastisol on lights and darks, 110 to 125 for white underbases and 156 to 160 for standard colors. Use 86 for athletic and puff inks, 180 to 230 for small text and water-based inks, and 280 to 305 for halftones and simulated process. Buckets of Ink stocks all of them pre-stretched from $27.

110 to 125 mesh. The larger openings lay down a thick, opaque white that flashes and prints bright top colors over it. On fleece drop to 86. If the underbase carries fine detail, 160 mesh keeps the edges cleaner at some cost to opacity.

230 to 305 mesh depending on the line screen. A 230 holds 35 to 45 lpi, 280 to 305 holds 45 to 55 lpi, and 355 to 420 holds 55 to 65 lpi dots. Use yellow mesh and a fast photopolymer emulsion such as Ulano QX-5 so the dots expose cleanly.

200 to 280 mesh. Water-based and discharge inks are thin and soak into the fabric, so a finer mesh keeps the deposit controlled and the hand soft. Pair it with a water-resistant emulsion such as Ulano 925WR.

Yellow mesh is dyed so it absorbs the UV light that scatters sideways through the threads during exposure, which keeps fine lines and halftone dots sharp. White mesh exposes slightly faster and is fine for coarse counts where the art is bold. Buckets of Ink stocks white mesh through 180 and yellow from 180 to 420.

Keep 3 to 4 inches between the image and the inside of the frame. A 20 x 24 inch frame prints a standard 12 x 14 inch tee design; 20 x 28 is the most common all-purpose size for manual and automatic presses; 23 x 31 handles oversize and jacket-back prints. Check the clamp width on your press before ordering.

At Buckets of Ink, pre-stretched Nortech aluminum screens run $27 to $35 in 20 x 24, $30 to $41 in 20 x 28 and $34 to $46 in 23 x 31, with price rising with mesh count. Shipping is included on orders over $250.

Yes. Aluminum screens are reclaimed many times: remove ink with screen wash or a dip tank, strip the emulsion with stencil remover, pressure wash, use haze remover for ghost images, then degrease and recoat. Replace the screen when the mesh tears or loses tension.

Yes. New mesh carries sizing from the factory that causes fisheyes and pinholes in the emulsion. Scrub with a degreaser, rinse thoroughly and let the screen dry before the first coat.
