"Emb thread" is shorthand for embroidery thread: the smooth, lustrous top thread used in an embroidery machine to form the visible stitches of a design. It is usually 40-weight polyester or rayon on a spool or cone, and it is paired with a finer bobbin thread underneath. "EMB" also appears as the file extension for Wilcom embroidery design files, which is where many people first see the abbreviation.

Embroidery thread polyester vs. rayon
Both run beautifully on any embroidery machine. The choice comes down to how the finished piece will be washed and how much shine the customer wants.
Strong, colorfast and bleach-resistant. The safe default for anything that will be laundered hard, bleached or worn outside.
The softest hand and deepest sheen. The traditional choice for fashion, monograms, heirloom work and home décor.
Top thread vs. bobbin thread
Emb thread goes through the needle. The bobbin holds a separate, finer thread that locks each stitch on the back of the fabric and stays hidden. Using emb thread in the bobbin wastes it and makes the back of the design bulky.

Typical stitch counts: left-chest logo 5,000 to 10,000; cap front 6,000 to 12,000; full back 30,000 to 60,000.

How-to
Cones hold far more thread than small spools, but most home machines only have a short spool pin. A separate thread stand fixes that in two minutes.

A 40-weight polyester embroidery thread is the best all-round choice for home machines such as Brother, Janome, Baby Lock and Bernina. It is strong and colorfast. Use 40-weight rayon when you want more sheen on items that will not be bleached.
Yes. Embroidery machine thread is smoother and more lustrous and is engineered for dense decorative stitching at high speed. All-purpose sewing thread is built for seam strength and has a duller finish, so embroidery made with it looks flat and breaks more often.
Yes, for decorative and topstitching with an embroidery or topstitch needle. For structural seams, use all-purpose sewing thread.
Polyester is better for items that are washed hard, bleached or worn outside, like uniforms, caps and towels. Rayon has a softer hand and deeper sheen for monograms, fashion and home decor, but should not be exposed to chlorine bleach.
Use 40-weight for most logos, text and fills with a 75/11 needle. Use 60-weight for lettering under 5 mm with a 65/9 needle, and 30-weight for bold coverage with an 80/12 to 90/14 needle.
A finer bobbin thread, commonly 60 to 90 weight, usually in white or black. Prewound bobbins give the most consistent tension. Emb thread is used on top only.
Yes. Place the cone on a separate thread stand behind the machine so the thread feeds up through an overhead guide, then thread the machine normally. Add a thread net to slippery polyester or metallic cones.
A common estimate is about 5 meters of top thread per 1,000 stitches. An 8,000-stitch left-chest logo uses roughly 40 meters, so one 5,000 meter cone holds about one million stitches.
