Multi needle embroidery machine: 7, 12 and 15-needle Happy Japan machines from $5,800
A multi needle embroidery machine keeps every thread color loaded on its own needle, so a logo runs start to finish without stopping to rethread. Buckets of Ink stocks the Happy Japan lineup from the 7-needle Journey to 15-needle single-heads and 4 to 12-head HCR3 systems, with current list prices below. Delivery, installation, operator training, parts and service come from our shop in Tempe, Arizona; machines ship nationwide.
What is a multi needle embroidery machine?
A multi needle embroidery machine has several needles on one head, each threaded with a different color, and the head shifts to the right needle automatically at every color change. A single-needle machine must stop so the operator can rethread for each color. Commercial multi-needle machines from Happy Japan carry 7, 12 or 15 needles per head, sew 1,000 to 1,200 stitches per minute, and accept cap frames, tubular hoops and flat frames. At Buckets of Ink in Tempe, Arizona, they start at $5,800 for the 7-needle Journey HCH-701, $9,700 for the 12-needle Voyager HCS3-1201 and $14,700 for the 15-needle HCD3e-1501; multi-head HCR3 systems with 15 needles per head run from $42,700 (4 heads) to $92,000 (12 heads).

Needle count calculator: how many needles do you need?
Enter the colors in your typical design and how many designs you run a day. The calculator counts the rethreads a 7, 12 and 15-needle machine would need and the time they cost, then names the machine that fits.
Assumes you keep your most-used colors loaded and rethread only the colors that do not fit. Estimates only; thread changes on a Happy Japan machine take about two minutes per needle.
7 vs 12 vs 15 needles: which multi needle machine to buy
Needle count sets how many colors stay loaded. Everything else on the spec sheet decides how fast and how large you can sew.
7 needles: Journey HCH-701, $5,800
Covers most team and company logos, which use 3 to 6 colors. Keep white, black and your four most common colors loaded. Lowest entry price with true cap sewing.
12 needles: Voyager HCS3-1201, $9,700
Loads a full basic palette plus accent colors so a day of mixed orders runs with few rethreads. Built-in laser marker for placement; compact footprint.
15 needles: HCD3e-1501, $14,700
Full-color logos, personalization and 3D puff without rethreading, 1,200 spm, a 20.5 x 15.7 inch field and 24-hour duty rating. The single-head most shops grow into.
15 needles x 4 to 12 heads: HCR3 series
Same 15-needle head, multiplied. Every head sews the same design at once, so a 6-head finishes six garments per cycle with one operator.
Speed and field size
The Journey and Voyager run 1,000 spm on an 11 x 11 inch field; the HCD3e runs 1,200 spm on 20.5 x 15.7 inches, large enough for jacket backs.
Cap capability
All Happy Japan multi-needle machines sew caps on a wide-angle frame. Cap frames are included with the HCD3e and HCR3 and added to the Journey and Voyager.
Thread break detection and trimmers
Every needle has its own thread break sensor and the machine trims between colors, which is what makes unattended multi-color runs possible.
Software and lettering
On-board lettering with 12 fonts, layout mode for names and numbers, and HAPPYLINK or HAPPYLAN to send designs from a PC.
Dealer and parts
Buy from a dealer who trains at your shop and stocks needles, bobbins, backing and thread. Buckets of Ink does, from Tempe.
How a multi needle embroidery machine runs a multi-color design
- Thread every needle onceAssign each color in the design to a needle number on the screen. Your most-used colors stay loaded across jobs.
- Load the designSend the file by USB or HAPPYLINK, set the color sequence to the needle numbers, and position it on the hoop with the laser or trace function.
- Hoop and mountHoop the garment with the right backing, or clamp a cap on the wide-angle frame, and seat it on the machine.
- Sew the first colorThe head runs at up to 1,200 spm; a thread break sensor stops the machine and backs up if a thread snaps.
- Automatic color changeAt each color stop the machine trims, shifts the head to the next needle and continues without an operator.
- Trim and unloadJump stitches are trimmed automatically. Unload, tear away the backing and hoop the next piece while a multi-head finishes the rest.

Multi needle embroidery machine questions
A multi needle embroidery machine carries several needles on one head, each threaded with its own color, and switches needles automatically at every color change in the design. Commercial machines from Happy Japan have 7, 12 or 15 needles per head. A single-needle machine has to stop for a manual rethread at each color.
Most logos use 3 to 6 colors, so a 7-needle machine such as the Journey HCH-701 covers them with a couple of spare needles. If you run mixed orders all day, 12 needles (Voyager HCS3-1201) keeps a full palette loaded. For full-color designs, personalization and the fewest rethreads, choose 15 needles (HCD3e-1501 or any HCR3). The needle count calculator on this page sizes it from your own color counts.
At Buckets of Ink, the 7-needle Journey HCH-701 is $5,800, the 12-needle Voyager HCS3-1201 is $9,700 and the 15-needle HCD3e-1501 is $14,700. Multi-head machines with 15 needles per head run from $42,700 for the 4-head HCR3-1504-45 to $92,000 for the 12-head HCR3-1512-45. Delivery, installation and training are arranged from Tempe, Arizona.
For a small business the 15-needle Happy Japan HCD3e-1501 is the usual pick: 1,200 spm, a 20.5 x 15.7 inch field, cap frames included and a 24-hour duty rating for $14,700. A shop starting on a tighter budget does well with the 12-needle Voyager at $9,700, and both share hoops, thread, needles and bobbins with the larger HCR3 line when it is time to add heads.
Stitch speed is similar, 1,000 to 1,200 spm, but a 15-needle machine finishes multi-color jobs faster because it never stops to rethread. On a 10-color design a 7-needle machine needs at least three rethreads of about two minutes each; the 15-needle runs straight through. The HCD3e-1501 also sews at 1,200 spm versus 1,000 on the Journey and Voyager.
Yes. Every Happy Japan multi needle machine on this page has a cylinder bed and takes a wide-angle cap frame; the HCD3e-1501 and HCR3 series include cap frames. See the hat embroidery machine page for cap fields and speeds.
Multi-needle describes the needles on one head, which sets how many colors stay loaded. Multi-head describes how many heads sew at once, which sets how many garments finish per cycle. The HCR3-1504-45 is both: 15 needles on each of four heads, 60 needles total.
40 weight polyester or rayon on cones, such as Madeira Polyneon or Classic Rayon, with 75/11 or 80/12 embroidery needles and prewound L-style bobbins. Load each needle with a different color and assign the design's color sequence to needle numbers on the screen. All of it is stocked on this page.
Easier than most owners expect. The touchscreen walks through threading, hooping and color assignment, thread break sensors stop the machine if a thread snaps, and Buckets of Ink trains your operator at install. Most new owners are running production in the first week.
